Basic Essentials for Andrew who cares for his younger siblings

Posted May 7, 2019
The family consists of 10 children between the ages of 10 and 21 and their biological mother and father. In 2012, this family was residing in Monmouth County, NJ when their home was badly damaged as a result of Super Storm Sandy. The family was placed in a motel for a number of days at which time Child Protective Services was contacted due to inadequate housing concerns. For no other reason than inadequate housing following the loss of their home, the 9 youngest children were placed in foster homes. The children were reunified with their parents in a matter of months. Shortly after returning home from placement, the children’s mother began using illicit substances which she quickly became addicted to. The father was not using but he was aware of the mother’s substance abuse and did not act to ensure the children were safe when they were in the care of their mother. It was at this time that the children were once again removed from the home. Reunification soon followed with 4 of the oldest children, however, the mother continued to struggle with substance abuse which soon led her to being Court Ordered out of the home. The mother’s absence from the home greatly impacted this family. As recently as two years ago, the father was a hardworking man who did all he could to support the 8 children who remained in his care. Despite working 60 hours per week, the father could not fully support his family who struggled to afford basic necessities such as food and medicine as well as the utilities being turned off. The father had battled mental illness his entire life, but he did not let that stop him from trying his best to care for his children. The last two years have been particularly difficult for this family. The children have reported to witnessing their mother overdosing from opiates in front of them. The mother’s life was only saved when one of the children made a phone call for help. Since that time, the children have not been allowed to be with their mother while unsupervised. Sadly, on 5/1/19, the father hanged himself in the family home. Tragically, his lifeless body was found by his 14-year-old daughter and he was cut down from door frame by his 16-year-old daughter. These children never had an opportunity to engage in sports, dance, extracurriculars, etc. The money collected for this family would go to enrichment purposes to help them have a little joy and perhaps even give them the first ever vacation they have been on in their young lives.

Andrew is 21 years old and lives in NJ

Andrew and his family became known to the Division in January 2012. A referral was called in regarding medical concerns for two of Andrew’s youngest siblings. Andrew is one of 10 siblings who resided with their mother and father. The referral led to the children’s removal due to medical neglect. Numerous referrals were called in to DCP&P with concerns regarding child neglect, and lack of housing. Andrew’s biological parents struggled with substance abuse and mental health concerns. In December 2012, DCP&P requested custody of Andrew and the remaining children. The Division was granted custody. The children were split up between family and resource care. Andrew and his siblings spent the next 7 years split up between households. Andrew spent this time being reunified with his parents, removed again and placed again with his parents. In 2019, the last removal took place when the children were removed from the home due to father’s suicide by hanging. It is reported Andrew is the one who found his father in the home when the incident took place. This incident took place a week before Andrew’s 17th birthday. Despite Andrew’s history, he has shown resilience and strength. He participated in services to address any mental health concerns. Andrew is respectful of others and does not exhibit any behavioral concerns. He enjoys playing video games and hanging with friends. Andrew currently resides with most of siblings in resource care. He visits regularly with his siblings who do not reside in his home. Andrew is smart and goal oriented. After graduating high school last June, he immediately looked for work. Andrew complies with DCP&P and related services on a monthly basis. Andrew has completed his summer goals of obtaining a job and registering for college. He will be attending Ocean County College in September 2021.
