New Home Essentials for Shantell who is working hard to change the foster care system

Posted Aug 6, 2019
From Shantell:" My wish would be to create a homelike environment. Ideally a place that is furnished and feels like a safe haven. I just moved into my first apartment 7/30/19. The wish means more than I can articulate in words. I have experienced the whirlwinds of the child-welfare system that unfortunately involved a series of movements and trash bags. I got so accustomed to being at a place for 3-4 months at a time that I never really settled in fully unpacked and took notice of my surroundings because in my head this was only temporary. I did the same thing throughout my undergraduate career while I was living in the dorms. Happy that I had a place but still uneasy because during breaks/ new school year I would have to remove all my belongings because I would be moving into a different dorm room. However, this time is different. I am in the DMV in my own apartment that doesn’t have winter/ summer breaks to where I’ll have to venture off to the next place. I am still. I am home. I am finally able to breathe knowing that for now, this is permanent. The gift of creating a home would mean the world to me and allow for me to lay the uncertainty to rest."

Shantell is 28 years old and lives in MD

From Shantell: "During the 19 years that I was in foster care, I lived in roughly 45 foster homes, eight group homes, and attended 23 different schools. Because of this instability, I have experienced the heartache of the child-welfare system firsthand. I would like to say that my story is an anomaly and the majority of foster youth do not have similar experiences, but that simply is not true. The tragedies foster youth encounter during their time in the foster care system are of no fault of their own, but rather the inadequacy of systems, laws, and policies. The child-welfare system was not designed from a trauma informed perspective, nor was it designed to elicit the feedback of those most impacted. However, my time in the Alameda County Foster Care System also stoked the fire that burns in my heart to truly transform the foster care system. I want to ensure that the next generation of foster youth does not experience the anguish of a broken system. I intend to work tirelessly toward creating a society where foster youth are treated humanely and provided the resources to live prosperous and healthy lives. One of my biggest accomplishments to date would be the summer of 2018 where I pursued a dual internship with the Congressional Coalition Adoption Institute (CCAI) and in Congress with Senator Amy Klobuchar. My experience in government allowed me to be immersed in our nation's political system and to learn how our government works on a daily basis. I not only wrote a policy report that was published and is actively being used by child welfare advocates throughout the United States, but I was also honored to be able to present the report to both chambers of Congress and the White House. Throughout my life, I have been an ally, advocate, and warrior for systemic change, because the youth of today and tomorrow deserve stability, love, and hope. I believe it is imperative for youth who have experienced this particular system to be at the forefront of policy reform. To not only have a seat at the table, but be at the head of the table. One day, I hope to create that space for current and former foster youth."
