Derrick has dedicated his life to being a voice to the voiceless - children growing up in the foster care system who are scared and broken, who feel powerless and caught in a system that sometimes doesn't protect them. Derrick knows all too well how these children feel, because he was once that child in foster care that didn't have a voice, having to move school districts, forced to give up playing his beloved sport, basketball, and worrying about where he was going to land. Fortunately, through years of perseverance, Derrick found his way in this world, and went on to serve as Chair of Florida Youth Shine, where he had a hand in shaping child welfare reform and legislation in Florida. Derrick is excited to be graduating law school and becoming a child advocacy attorney.
