Joey, 32 years old, CA

Joey is a former foster youth who was a ward of the court for nearly 11 years. At the age of 22, while experiencing homelessness, he began his recovery from substance use. On April 10, 2025, he proudly celebrated 10 years of continuous recovery. He is currently a full-time night student majoring in Social Work on the pre-law track, maintaining a GPA of 3.774. In addition to his studies, Joey serves as a member of an advisory board committee, where he uses his personal experiences to drive systemic change and support others in recovery. During his limited free time, he volunteers to run peer support groups for adults struggling with substance use disorders or dual diagnoses. He also creates wellness handouts, prints resource guides, and prepares materials for those who may lack access to technology or stable housing.
