Joy, 18 years old, NJ
As a transgender young woman in the foster care system, she struggled daily with the irony that her birth family was unconditionally supportive of her gender identity, but could not provide a safe, stable home for her due to substance abuse. Joy's foster home provided shelter and warm meals, but no sensitivity to the medical and emotional needs of a transgender youth. Joy is ready to celebrate a new phase of life - where she can call her own shots and surround herself with people who understand and support her. She dropped out of high school, but is working and reassessing her plans for the future.
