Foster NationBrandy spent 11 years in the foster care system, during which she faced challenges in building healthy relationships due to the trauma she experienced. However, she has grown significantly as a young adult and is proud of her resilience. Although she initially dropped out of college due to a lack of support, funding, and inclusivity, she is now preparing to graduate with her Bachelor's degree in the coming year. Brandy believes that foster youth need more time and support well into their 20s and wishes for a system that is more inclusive of diverse identities. Throughout her hardships, she has found comfort in her emotional support animal, her artwork, and her dedication to education. After graduating from UC San Diego, Brandy hopes to start a nonprofit organization that connects shelter animals with incarcerated individuals.
During her time in the foster care system, Brandy discovered the comfort of creative outlets. She finds it especially meaningful to combine her crafts with important beliefs and aspects of her life. Brandy is eager to take a rug-making class, as she would love the opportunity to learn a new artistic skill. She hopes to create rugs in the shapes of the pets that have supported her throughout her journey.
