Crystin, 21 years old, NJ

Crystin has struggled with mental health challenges as well as diagnoses of ASD and ADHD. His mother was unfortunately unable to care for him, so his grandmother took custody of him and continues to be his primary caregiver. As she has gotten older, it has become more difficult for her to keep up with his needs, activities, and respite services. Over the years, Crystin has been hospitalized multiple times for stabilization. Because of these experiences, he has shared that he often does not feel like a “normal boy.” He relies heavily on his grandmother for support, and during unstructured times, she hopes he can have activities that allow him quiet time and independence. Crystin currently attends therapeutic treatment services and participates in a partial day program. These supports continue to play an important role in his daily life and long-term well-being. Although Crystin faces many challenges, he works hard to make the best of his life and enjoys spending time with his grandmother, who remains very dedicated to his care. He likes staying busy when he is not attending his programs and especially enjoys activities that challenge him to think and solve problems.
