Assistance with rent

Posted May 22, 2023
Karyzma is one of the many young adults that aged out of foster care without securing permanency and connections to assist them through difficult times in life. Karyzma experienced medical issues recently which rendered her unable to work. Once she recovered, she took two semesters off from Rutgers University to she could work full time to catch up with her bills. Unfortunately, it proved to be very difficult, and she is now facing eviction. Karyzma was taken to court by the landlord company and if she does not provide $1,875 by May 16th, she will be evicted. She tried to obtain assistance from agencies like Catholic Charities, Episcopal Church, among other agencies, and was not able to obtain the needed assistance. She is now facing homelessness.

Karyzma is 25 years old and lives in NJ

Karyzma entered foster care when she was 11 years old due to both of her parents not willing to care for her. Karyzma was not able to find permanency and remained in foster care until she aged out at age 21. Karyzma is a sweet, loving young lady who prides herself on making through very challenging times in her short life and never giving up on pursuing her dreams. Karyzma always maintained her focus on her education, advising that she knew making it in life depended on her being able to attain her goal of becoming a nurse. Karyzma is very strong-willed and resilient. She kept her eye on the prize and was accepted to NJCU and is now attending Rutgers University. But this long road for her has not been without many barriers. The shutdown of the pandemic affected Karyzma's employment and ability to manage her finances effectively. Karyzma now faces another battle, eviction. In November 2022, Karyzma was having problems with her gallbladder and then caught covid. Unfortunately, she had to use all of her paid time off. She was not able to work for two months, and this caused her to be behind on her rent. Once she recovered, Karyzma had to take off two semesters from school so she could focus on working fulltime in order to catch up with her bills but has struggled significantly to do so. She was taken to eviction court and was advised she must pay $1785.00 in arears by May 16th. Karyzma tried to secure money by asking her support system for help, however, because of the large amount of money, it's been difficult/.
