Two tickets for Derrell and a friend to attend a San Diego State Aztec basketball game

Derrell, 17 years old, CA

Derrell has overcome significant challenges to be the person he is today. He is on the autism spectrum and has significant language processing issues (was unable to communicate, either to understand language or speak), so essentially was non-verbal until the age of 8 at which time he was first enrolled in school and started receiving therapeutic services. After 7 years of intensive therapies and interventions in both a home and special needs class setting, Derrell could understand and communicate verbally, can read and type, and knows basic math. He enjoys gaming with his friends online, practicing his rap and hip-hop skills, and playing sports and recreational outings with peers. Most importantly, he is a kind, funny, inquisitive, and social young man. Over the years the Hanai program has helped him immensely, improving his social skills and providing him a sense of camaraderie and community with its group of caring volunteers.

Derrell's favorite sport is basketball, and he would love to attend a game with a best friend. San Diego State is his dream college, and he's been watching their basketball games on TV for as long as we can remember!

"Thank you for your generosity. This gift will provide an experience and impact that Derrell will remember for the rest of his life. He's been in our programs for quite a few years and has grown so much throughout the years. His trauma with his biological parents make him apprehensive of others but he's been opening up to his mentors in our monthly program. Next month will be our last outing for 2023 and he's going to be so excited to receive this gift....from the kindness of an adult who specifically chose him to sponsor! Thank you. -Urban Surf 4 Kids"
