An electric scooter for Isaiah to get around town without paying for the bus

Posted Feb 26, 2024
Currently, Isaiah walks or catches a city bus to the library, a journey that has the potential to be both costly and unsafe. Amazingly, after many years in foster care, the library has turned out to be a place where he feels he belongs, a quiet and safe place, a place where he can connect to a friend group who engage in similar interests, a sanctuary of sorts. Having rented a scooter once or twice, he has felt freedom and self-reliance that he has never felt before. Unfortunately, renting scooters can be quite expensive and not a sustainable option. This electric scooter could truly be a long-term solution to not only getting to the library but also opening up his world to other opportunities, such as possible employment, as it will allow him to travel distances more efficiently and safely.

Isaiah is 17 years old and lives in DC

Isaiah has been in foster care for many years. He is now placed in a group home but has found a supportive refuge in the neighborhood library, about a mile from his home. As soon as he gets home from school, he heads to the library to be on the computers in the teen center. He has made friends with other kids his age who also spend all their spare time at the library. All the staff know him, and he's working on completing some community service hours there, which are required for graduation. Isaiah also enjoys art, video games, IHOP, and joking around with everyone in his life.
