Mateo has a big personality and heart to match. He has big dreams for himself of becoming an astronaut (or a wrestler). Mateo has been in and out of foster care for the majority of his life, but lives with his uncle who is very supportive of his dreams and a great mentor. Mateo does hope to one day reunite with his mother.

The bond they share is strengthened by these shared experiences, especially the peaceful moments spent casting lines into the tranquil waters. However, a change is on the horizon as Teo's brother prepares to move into a larger room, creating a new sense of independence as he begins to have that space all to himself.
