Ana Maria, 18 years old | 3 DAYS WAITING

Strength Based Community Change (SBCC)

At 15, Ana Maria entered foster care with her four sisters, taking on parental responsibilities throughout her childhood. She is studying nursing in college, crediting her time in care for her independence and confidence. Despite the tragedy of losing her mother to addiction, Ana is caring, nurturing, and extroverted, actively seeking connections and advocating for foster youth rights. In her free time, she enjoys reading, crocheting, and watching Korean dramas. Ana has taught herself sign language and passed this skill to her youngest sister. Crocheting, which she took up in foster care, allows her to express her emotions creatively, and she has made various items, including a memorable horse.

Ana Maria is requesting a gift card to visit her closest friend, who lives an hour away. She does not take breaks during the winter or summer semesters, as she is focused on completing her prerequisites as efficiently as possible. A chance to socialize and explore a big town with her best friend, without the added stress of fuel expenses, would offer her a much-needed mental break. Receiving this gas card would help relieve some of the financial pressure that comes with being an independent young adult in foster care. In addition to managing her school responsibilities, Ana is responsible for her car insurance, gas, and monthly bills. This assistance would make a meaningful difference in her ability to stay on track academically and emotionally. This wish was broken into two parts, to allow for a memorable experience! This is wish 2 of 2.
