Mateo is the oldest of his siblings and has a quiet strength that makes others feel safe. He takes on a lot of responsibility and tries to protect his younger siblings, even when he’s feeling unsure himself. Having been placed in foster care after a time of deep uncertainty, Mateo is doing his best to stay focused in school and be a steady example for his family. He’s thoughtful, serious, and always trying to learn more so he can help those he loves.

Mateo would like the opportunity to have a shopping experience where he can pick out his own school supplies. He wants to choose a backpack that fits him, select his own notebooks and calculator, and feel the freedom of deciding what works best for him. After so much change, being trusted to make these choices would mean more than just having supplies, it would be a step toward rebuilding confidence and independence.
