Jacob is a soft-spoken and gentle student who has joined us from Guatemala with his family. He is one of five siblings and currently has very limited English skills. Being an English Language Learner (ELL) can be difficult, as many things can get lost in translation. Jacob often feels frustrated when he can't express himself clearly. However, when he understands something, his joy lights up the room. He is kind to everyone he meets. His family lives in a small two-bedroom house, and his mom stays at home with the baby. They are very close, but Jacob has shared that sometimes they feel a bit crowded. Recently, he expressed a desire to have his own remote-controlled truck—one that lights up and goes really fast. He says that playing with it makes him feel both scared and excited at the same time.

In a busy household where Dad is the sole provider for five kids, holidays are a rare treat. Jacob wishes for something special that he doesn’t have to share with his siblings. He dreams of having a remote-controlled truck that is his, something he can cherish without the worry of having to give it up when his brothers and sisters want a turn. Jacob simply longs for something that is entirely "all his."
