Hughes' mother was killed in a car accident. His father has a no-contact order due to several charges. As a result, Hughes and his sister were placed with their aunt until their grandmother could secure temporary emergency custody. Hughes suffers from severe asthma, and his grandmother is also in the process of getting some tests done due to potential developmental delays. He is a very loving little boy who enjoys being held and cuddled. He is active and loves to play, but his grandmother has to limit his running due to his asthma.

Due to limited space in their apartment, Hughes has a bunk bed that he will share with his sibling. However, he still needs a mattress for his bed to ensure he can get a restful night's sleep in a space of his own. Right now, without a mattress, he has to sleep with his grandmother, which isn't ideal. The new mattress would also come with a removable zipper cover, making it easy to wash and helping to manage his asthma. This would greatly improve his comfort and well-being.
