A Chromebook for Kym who is ready to start a college program

Kym, 19 years old, NJ

Kym came to his current home through a Transitional Living Program after dealing with years of instability in housing. Recently, he faced uncertainty again when his family had to move to a new place that couldn’t accommodate everyone. Despite these challenges, Kym has shown incredible strength. He worked hard to finish high school while living in a rooming house with a parent, even though it was in a different town from his school. He would wake up at 5 AM and bike several miles in all kinds of weather just to get to class. When he faced the threat of homelessness, Kym took action by looking for help. He found a residential Life Skills Program that offers stable housing and learning opportunities in areas like money management, home maintenance, and preparing for a more independent life, including higher education. During his time in the Transitional Living Program, Kym has shown himself to be motivated, reliable, sincere, humble, and very resourceful.

Kym is starting the next stage of his education! While he is still in the process of deciding which track to pursue and at which institution, Kym is committed to obtaining a degree or certificate in one of his many areas of interest. He is exploring options in various fields, including NJ Transit, the Department of Corrections, plumbing, and nursing. Currently, Kym is completing all of the necessary financial aid prerequisites, various aptitude assessments, and researching programs offered at community colleges and vocational-technical schools. It's clear that having his own computer will be a valuable asset in this endeavor, especially in the preliminary stages. With his own computer, Kym will have more opportunities to engage in the initial phases of his education on his own time—specifically in the evenings and on weekends, when he is not working full-time—rather than being limited to the finite hours when staff is available at the TLP House and access to the program's technology and computers is provided to the young adult residents.
