A communication device for Mildred who has autism and cerebral palsy

Mildred, 9 years old, NE

Boys Town Foster Family Services

Mildred was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age, and her case reflects severe medical neglect. She entered foster care in 2024. Since being placed in a foster home, Mildred has received essential medical care and services, including physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT), which have helped her progress significantly. Initially wheelchair-bound, Mildred has made remarkable strides; with the support of her foster parent and therapy, she can now stand on her own, pull herself up, and walk both assisted and unassisted up and down stairs. Recently, Mildred has also been diagnosed with autism.

Mildred is making great progress at school using her communication device; however, she cannot bring it home with her. She would benefit from having a device at home to help her communicate with others. This device grows with the learner, allowing her family to record custom audio and add personalized images to meet her daily needs. As Mildred gets older and her vocabulary expands, her foster parent can change the tiles to match her current learning level and interests. The device is specifically designed for communication and does not include distractions from other apps. By using this device at home, Mildred can continue learning and growing outside of school.
