A baby doll for Nikki to feel more comfortable during her transition
Nikki, 9 years old, OH

The Bair FoundationNikki is in foster care, and while she carries herself with a quiet strength, the transition has not been easy. She is incredibly resilient, adapting to new surroundings, new routines, and unfamiliar faces with more courage than most children her age, but beneath that strength is a young child still trying to make sense of everything she has lost. In her previous home, Nikki often took on responsibilities far beyond her years and was parentified, which is part of why she is now struggling to adjust to simply being a child and allowing others to care for her. Nikki is learning to trust again, to find her voice, and to feel safe in a world that has changed so quickly. There are moments when her struggles show through in hesitation or sadness, but even then, her determination shines. With patience, consistency, and care, Nikki has the potential not just to adjust, but to truly heal and thrive.
Nikki finds comfort in playing with dolls. She likes to pretend to have a family and take care of her dolls, which feels familiar to her. However, the dolls she has don’t look like her, and she’s been asking for a Black baby doll that she can connect with better. In her past home, Nikki had to take on a lot of adult responsibilities, so her treatment team believes that playing with dolls can really help her heal. Having a doll that looks like her would make her feel seen and understood. It would also help her work through her feelings in a safe way, allowing her to enjoy being a kid again.
