Greater Oregon Behavioral Health, IncRoyce is in kinship care and is being raised by his grandmother. Although he is deeply loved, he still feels the lasting effects of growing up without consistent parental support. One of the most significant gaps in Royce’s life is the absence of strong male role models in his home. He thrives when he is cared for by male coaches who provide the encouragement, structure, and accountability that he cannot find at home. These mentoring relationships have become essential to his growth and confidence as a young man.
Royce dreams of earning a college scholarship through sports, and he puts in a lot of hard work and practice to reach that goal. His coach, has been a steady male mentor in his life, offering support and encouragement that has helped Royce grow in confidence both on and off the basketball court. He is now more focused, self-assured, and motivated than ever. Basketball has also helped Royce reconnect with his father, who is working on his sobriety and shares his love for the game. Playing together has given them a way to bond and rebuild their relationship, which is very important to Royce.
