Arcadia University- H.O.M.E. ProgramKyra is an artistic and strong young woman who enjoys drawing, reading, writing, and playing the electric guitar. She was born prematurely with drugs in her system, and although child services got involved, she remained with her parents until her grandparents eventually gained custody. Growing up, she experienced instability, poverty, and the impact of her parents’ addiction. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she endured neglect and unsafe living conditions that led to serious struggles, including an eating disorder. She was placed in emergency housing, then separated from her brother and sent to live with different relatives, where her needs were often overlooked. From there, she cycled through a shelter and a group home, staying quiet and resilient until she graduated high school. Now she carries the lessons of resilience, survival, and perseverance with her while working to build a better future.
Kyra is asking for a cookware set for her on-campus apartment. She currently does not have any pots or pans, which makes it difficult for her to cook meals for herself while living on campus. Having her own cookware would allow her to prepare meals at home and rely less on more expensive food options. Her roommates are also members of the H.O.M.E. program, so they would be able to share the set and cook meals together. This would help make their apartment feel more like home while giving them what they need to cook for themselves.
