NE DHHS - Douglas County

L is a twin who was born prematurely into a home with both drugs and domestic violence. He became a foster child at 1 month old. After being sent home he developed failure to thrive. It was learned that his mother was only feeding him water. L has severe asthma and has had to be rushed to the hospital at times when it couldn't be controlled with regular medicine. He, his twin, and his little sister are expected to be adopted by their step-grandmother. They have been thriving in her home since coming into care. Despite health problems, L is extremely smart and active. He is extremely sweet with his sisters and he is normally quick to share his toys and snacks, though he won't share his stickers.

Luca is full of joy, and despite a rough start in life and ongoing health challenges, he is quite active. His foster mom has worked hard to keep his medical needs stable so he can take part in community activities. She is a retired VA nurse, is also raising two other young children, and will soon be their adoptive mom. She has a prosthetic leg, and it has never slowed her down. The children are fascinated by animals and love the zoo, but visits are hard for a family of four to afford. A zoo membership would give them a special activity they can enjoy often, along with the zoo's many events throughout the year, and it would feed the curiosity and love of learning she works so hard to nurture in them.
