Kayla is shy at first, but once she feels comfortable with someone, she starts to open up and smile. She enjoys art, listening to rock music, and petting her cats. Kayla also enjoys school, where she is recognized for her good grades. Raised by her loving grandmother, who describes Kayla as her hope during difficult times, she is cherished deeply.

Kayla is starting high school with a real determination to step outside her comfort zone, meet new people, and try things she's never had the chance to before. Homecoming is one of those things. She never went to dances back in junior high and has never really danced at all, but this year, she wants to be part of it- the dances, the events, and everything that comes with the full high school experience. For a long time, Kayla has had to go without things other kids her age have enjoyed, and that's made her more closed off than she'd like. An event like Homecoming could be a real turning point for her, a chance to feel included, confident, and excited about something just for fun. She's already looking forward to the process itself: going to the store, trying on dresses, and picking out the perfect one along with shoes to match- the kind of exciting, ordinary experience that means so much more to Kayla than it might to someone else.
