New home, new school, new faces- Neka is the new kid all around and remains hidden in her hoodie. Neka is new to the suburbs and has been unable to get her hair done properly leaving her lacking confidence and afraid to take her hoodie down. Neka has spent years falling behind academically and socially and now has the chance she has been waiting for. Initially scared of the suburbs, Neka was delighted to learn that she was not the only African American in her school as she suspected. She has a chance to shine and is hopeful she will make friends in her new school and do well in school. With her hoodie down and her hair done, the world is open to her.
Neka is 18 years old and lives in NY
Neka's nuturing spirit is adjusting well in her new foster home. No longer responsible for her siblings, Neka is able to focus on being a kid. She has shifted her determination from how to take care of her mother to her own schoolwork and making friends. Neka, able to relax, and has already learned she loves playing basketball!
