About Jah'asa

Jah'asa is 15 years old and lives in NJ

Asa is a precocious, pleasant, joyful, little 9-year-old. She came to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program as a result of her mother wanting her to have something that was uniquely there for her. Asa lives with her mother, and her mother’s boyfriend, and their collective, blended family. There are five children in the house under the age of 11, so needless to say there is a lot of action going on! When Asa and her Big Sister were matched, it was a chance to do things just one on one with an adult – something that doesn’t usually happen. While Asa is a very outgoing child, she is not always confident, especially regarding her intellect/scholastic abilities. Asa struggles a bit in school, however she has the ability – she just needs a bit more practice and encouragement. As such, she has been challenged with a summer reading goal. The goal is to read as many books as she could by the time school started. There are not many books to read in her house (her Mom is legally blind) and she doesn’t often pick up a book as a form of entertainment. When this began, Asa was reading Level 1 books. Already, she is now on Level 2 books and will move to level 3 during the next visit to the Library. In the few weeks of doing this, she has already read 15 books! There is already a change to her confidence and she is really enjoying herself with these books.
