When he was just a toddler, Curtis’s mother passed away and, due to mental illness, his father was unable to care for him. His grandmother raised him for a while but then he had to enter foster care and it was there that he endured numerous abusive and traumatic events. Despite all of this, Curtis went on to achieve a higher education. But even after this triumph, Curtis fell on hard times. He became homeless and was living on the streets when an amazing advocate shared his story on Facebook pleading for someone to help. That’s when Whitney, herself a foster care alumni, saw his story and knew she had to act. She and her husband decided to welcome Curtis into their home and when they first met him, he literally had nothing but the clothes on his back and one pair of extra briefs. No backpack, no luggage, no other belongings. He had recently sold all of his clothing for food.
