Jade, her sister, and her mom moved to Alabama from California years ago and they were removed from their mother’s care not long after due to neglect, abuse and their mother's drug use. It was an extremely chaotic and unstable environment. Jade's aunt didn't really know the girls but was happy to welcome them to her home. When Jade's aunt met Jade, she had a book in her hand and she doesn't know many times she has seen her without one since. Jade loves reading more than anything. Before Jade went to live with her aunt, she had an open truancy case for 17 absences in less than a semester of school, and was failing 2 classes. Now Jade is applying for colleges and determined to make more of her life than what she ever thought possible. She started visiting colleges and is applying for all the scholarships and grants available to her. She is an amazingly perceptive and intelligent girl with a strong GPA and the motivation to make it through college and break the cycle of poverty, jail and drug use that she comes from. Jade has a bright future ahead of her.
