Jaylen, 17 years old, VA

Jaylen keeps a notebook of lyrics he's written since he was twelve, filling pages with verses that started as a way to survive years of trauma he didn't have the words to say out loud any other way. He's currently in a residential treatment facility, working intensively through the weight of significant abuse and repeated placement disruptions that have followed him for most of his life. It's been a long, hard road, but Jaylen has started to open up in group therapy, and staff have noticed real growth in how he manages his anger, something that used to control him before he had the tools to understand it. He freestyles quietly to himself when he thinks no one's listening, and he's slowly letting a couple of peers and staff members hear what he's written. Jaylen can be defensive and quick to shut down when he feels judged, a survival skill built from years of not being believed or protected, but there are glimpses of a thoughtful, gifted young man underneath that armor. He's carrying more pain than most adults ever have to face, and he deserves patience, consistent support, and people who see the person he's fighting to become, not just the label the system has given him.
