Community Schools is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization created to serve vulnerable students who are currently or formerly involved in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems. Our mission is to engage, educate, and ensure that vulnerable students learn, heal, and grow, into caring, confident, competent citizens of the world. Our promise is to walk beside them, guiding them and loving them up on their journey. CBCS launched its first program in 2015, the C.B. Community School, recognizing a dire need to create a new kind of high school for students in care. Our goal is to serve the most vulnerable students in care who are struggling in traditional schools; students who need a different way to learn because traditional schools and institutional placements have not worked for them. Our school uses a competency based instructional approach and provides onsite social and emotional services so that our students are ready and able to learn and get back on track to graduation and postsecondary opportunities. CBCS has raised private funds to launch our first school, with each student receiving a full scholarship to attend. Our organization serves over 100 young people, our current students and alumni as well. CBCS uses a competency based approach to education aligned to the Pennsylvania Standards and Common Core that allows students to progress to more advanced work upon demonstration of learning by applying specific skills and content. Competency based education is transparent, which is crucial for our students who have been traumatized. Knowing where they are going academically and being able to see and record their own mastery of benchmarks and attainment of competencies allows our students to trust the process and feel in control of their own lives. C.B. Community Schools provides onsite social services linking our young people to urgent and ongoing clinical care, legal advocacy, and nursing services. We also employ a full-time social worker dedicated to work with social service case managers. CBCS offers onsite programming by partnering with various local social service, art, and behavioral health agencies. To expose our students to postsecondary opportunities, CBCS partners with local colleges and universities, community colleges, trade schools and JobCorps programs. Students attend tours throughout the year and eligible graduates work with a full-time college counselor to prepare their postsecondary plans. Staying connected to our students makes our model unique. When they graduate, or even if they leave us temporarily during high school, they are always a part of our community and we remain committed to helping them stay on a positive productive path.
