Jalen is a current non-minor dependent foster youth who has low self-esteem issues due to his parents' verbal and emotional abuse. Jalen has overcome adversity from the abuse and is now in a supportive living situation with a foster family that truly cares about his well-being. Jalen reported that for the first time, he is feeling positive about his capabilities as a student-athlete. In high school, Jalen was a track and field star and won several track meets as a senior. Jalen was given a scholarship due to his athletic abilities and is excited for that adventure. Jalen is working very hard and doing his best in both academics and sports, as he is reporting that he is getting A's thus far in college.

Jalen is finally on his winter break and is looking forward to visiting the local Barnes and Noble bookstore to purchase some reading material while he is out of school. Jalen is not into any video games and would prefer to read a good book. Jalen is uncertain exactly which books he is interested in but would really enjoy searching for some non-fiction as well as fiction material.
