Nichole had never attended school until recently. She was placed in a grade level appropriate for her age, but the school has limited resources to support her literacy development. As a result, Nichole is struggling with feelings of depression because she cannot participate in class like her classmates. She is eager to learn to read, and her advocate is willing to help her. They just need the necessary resources, and a reading phonics kit would be an excellent starting point for them.
Nichole is 16 years old and lives in NJ
Nichole was born in Guatemala and moved to the USA with her father at the age of 12. Although her family was very poor and she had never attended school, her main responsibility was to care for her younger siblings while her parents searched for odd jobs. Upon arriving in the USA, her father did not enroll her in school; instead, he left her in the care of an acquaintance he had met. At a young age, Nichole became pregnant, and by the age of 16, she ended up in foster care. It was discovered that she was completely illiterate in both Spanish and English. Deep down, Nichole truly wants to learn and be a good mother to her daughter, but she struggles with feelings of low self-worth. Despite these challenges, she has a beautiful heart and many goals for herself. What she needs is a solid reminder of how valuable and meaningful her life is right now.
