MassNFCAAce is a foster care alumnus who has faced more hardship than most do in a lifetime but continues to move forward with strength, creativity, and heart. After entering the system due to violence in the home, Ace endured years of instability, mistreatment, and constant displacement, moving through 19 different placements. Despite the trauma, Ace kept showing up. For school. For work. For life. They love dogs, plants, arts and crafts, makeup, roller skating, Nintendo gaming, reading, and the color purple.
After a long and tough semester, Ace is really looking forward to something simple but meaningful: a hair appointment with someone who truly gets how to care for natural African-American hair. It’s been months since she’s seen a real stylist, and she’s excited about the idea of taking down her wig, getting her natural hair washed and conditioned, and having a new wig styled and put in by a stylist she’s known since she was a kid. This isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling connected and cared for by someone who understands her hair. For Ace, taking care of herself is vital to her healing. After spending years in the foster care system, she’s learning to find stability and how to care for herself in ways she never learned before. When she looks good, she feels good, and that helps her keep pushing forward.
