NJ DCFS - Ocean CountyDariel began living with his maternal grandmother shortly after he was born because his parents were unable to care for him. He visits his mother every week and shares a strong bond with her, as well as with his grandmother and aunts. Dariel has been closely monitored by his doctors due to developmental delays and sensory-seeking behaviors. He is currently receiving services through Early Intervention and wears a helmet to prevent injury when he bangs his head. His family is dedicated to ensuring he receives everything he needs, and they enjoy watching him learn to play and communicate with the world around him.
Dariel has been engaging in early intervention services for several years, and he was recently diagnosed with Autism. Dariel's therapists have noticed that he seeks sensory input when he is feeling frustrated or overstimulated. Because of this, Dariel has to wear a helmet at times because he will bang his head on the floor. Dariel's therapists have been trying different ways to help him calm down, such as massaging his arms and letting him use ride-on toys. During his last treatment team meeting, the therapists recommended that Dariel get a compression vest so he can wear it during his sessions. Dariel's grandmother is hoping that this will help him be more successful with therapy and other daily tasks.
