Laye is a bright, beautiful young girl who carries herself with a maturity beyond her years, though she sometimes struggles to manage and process her emotions. She recently experienced a difficult family change. Her father, whom her and her mother were living with, moved out after her mother chose to dedicate her life to her faith as a Jehovah's Witness, a path he did not agree with. Just two months later, he married another woman and has done nothing for Laye. This has left Laye feeling deeply hurt and betrayed, as she continues to navigate the pain of this unexpected loss.

Laye is in need of a new pair of shoes for school. Her current ones are very old and dirty. Her mother recently made the difficult decision to leave her job in order to fully focus on meeting the growing needs of Laye. Since her father left, he has not been present to help support them. Having a reliable pair of shoes would help ease some of that burden, giving Laye and her mother one less thing to worry about as she heads into the school year.
