CASA of Passaic and Union Counties (NJ)With over ten years in foster, Sonja has endured more than any child should ever have to bear. Her father passed away from an overdose, and her mother went missing and has never been heard from since. Sonja bounced between several foster placements, and at age 12, she thought she had found her forever home. Tragically, Sonja ended up being physically abused in that home, and thus, her foster care journey continued. Sonja lived in a very supportive treatment home throughout her high school years. When she graduated high school, she applied to community colleges to continue her education, determined to put her life on a better course. She is studying to be a radiologist and also working to pay for her living expenses - housing, food, car insurance, phone bill, and school essentials.
This month, Sonja will age out of foster care, losing a vital source of support right as a new semester begins, and to make things harder, her laptop just died. Facing the thought of taking on more debt just to have a working device for school feels very overwhelming for her, especially after she recently worked hard to pay off a long-standing credit card debt and improve her credit. Instead of a laptop, Sonja is hoping for an iPad with an external keyboard, something that could get her through the rest of her college years without undoing that progress. Bills seem to pile up constantly, but receiving this device would let her stay focused on her education instead of worrying about how to afford the tools she needs to succeed.
