A special salon day for Maya who has never had her hair done can't wait to go back to school to show off her new style

Maya, 14 years old, NJ

NJ DCFS - Burlington County

Maya is a young adolescent who struggles with anxiety and depression, stemming from a traumatic childhood. As a result, she faces challenges with self-esteem, social isolation, and personal hygiene. Currently in the 10th grade, Maya often comes to school looking disheveled, which unfortunately makes her a target for bullying among her peers. Standing out due to her size, she typically wears t-shirts and men's shorts or pants. Additionally, her family is on a fixed income with only one income provider, making it difficult for them to purchase new clothing.

Maya has never had her hair done, and as the new school year approaches, she’s really eager for a change. Lately, she’s felt a bit off when it comes to her hygiene, so a trip to the salon could be just what she needs. She’s hopeful that a fresh look will give her a confidence boost, making it easier to connect with new friends and start the year on a positive note. It’s more than just hair; it’s about feeling good and ready to embrace whatever comes her way.
