Legal Fee's for Nicole to change her name
Posted Apr 30, 2019
Nicole was born at the hospital to a mother who was unable to take her home. From the hospital, she was was adopted and given a different name. She lived with that adoptive mother until she became ill and passed away. At that point, Nicole was adopted again and had her name changed again. She lived with that family until she identified as being LGBTQ and was thrown out of the home. She went back into the State's care, with no one to turn to as a teen. She had been trying to find her biological family for most of her life. She was ultimately able to obtain her original birth certificate and meet her family, a few weeks before her 21st birthday. During her whole life Nicole struggled with the idea of "family" after feeling she was "left" at the hospital and having gone through two failed adoptions. She also questioned her identity and where she came from, often asking herself "who am I?". Meeting her siblings and sharing their similar stories, helped her put some of the missing pieces together. At her last court hearing, to close her case with the State, Nicole asked for her name to be changed, to her original name on her birth certificate. Unfortunately, it was not able to be done. For the first time in Nicole's life she feels like she "belongs" and has a sense of family. Nicole now has "aged out" of the State's care, has her own apartment and works, but she does not have the money to obtain legal assistance to change her name.
