Dameon has experienced health issues since his time in foster care, and currently he is experiencing active heart failure. After aging out of care, he missed a deadline that temporarily suspended his insurance, and this was the catalyst for a spiral that ended with homelessness and these current health conditions. Since this happened, Dameon has been able to get his insurance restored, and then used his SSDI to secure housing, but he is still struggling to fully recover from such a major set back. Because of his age (24), he no longer qualifies for many services former foster youth are able to receive after leaving care, and because he is single with no dependents, his SSDI makes his ineligible for many other services. His SSDI also restricts his ability to work, but alone it's not enough. We also just learned that he is experiencing 90% heart failure so he needs to be resting and keeping his heart rate down, but he is still pursuing food pantries and other services to help fill his needs that have fallen between the cracks. Dameon would love to be able to go to the grocery store or even have his groceries delivered to him. He is trying his hardest to maintain the low sodium diet his doctor encouraged.
