Basic Essentials for Emma who loves to dress to impress

Posted May 7, 2019
Emma desperately needs new clothes and beauty supplies, to help her feel as beautiful as she can in this sad time in her life. The family consists of 10 children between the ages of 10 and 21 and their biological mother and father. In 2012, this family was residing in Monmouth County, NJ when their home was badly damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy. The family was placed in a motel for a number of days at which time Child Protective Services was contacted due to inadequate housing concerns. For no other reason than inadequate housing following the loss of their home, the 9 youngest children were placed in foster homes. The children were reunified with their parents in a matter of months. Shortly after returning home from placement, the children’s mother began using illicit substances which she quickly became addicted to. The father was not using but he was aware of the mother’s substance abuse and did not act to ensure the children were safe when they were in the care of their mother. It was at this time that the children were once again removed from the home. Reunification soon followed with 4 of the oldest children, however, the mother continued to struggle with substance abuse which soon led her to being Court Ordered out of the home. The mother’s absence from the home greatly impacted this family. As recently as two years ago, the father was a hardworking man who did all he could to support the 8 children who remained in his care. Despite working 60 hours per week, the father could not fully support his family who struggled to afford basic necessities such as food and medicine as well as the utilities being turned off. The father had battled mental illness his entire life, but he did not let that stop him from trying his best to care for his children. The last two years have been particularly difficult for this family. The children have reported to witnessing their mother overdosing from opiates in front of them. The mother’s life was only saved when one of the children made a phone call for help. Since that time, the children have not been allowed to be with their mother while unsupervised. Sadly, on 5/1/19, the father hanged himself in the family home. Tragically, his lifeless body was found by his 14-year-old daughter and he was cut down from door frame by his 16-year-old daughter. These children never had an opportunity to engage in sports, dance, extracurriculars, etc. The money collected for this family would go to enrichment purposes to help them have a little joy and perhaps even give them the first ever vacation they have been on in their young lives.
