Akela is a student from New York who was accepted into CCAI’s 2022 Foster Youth Internship Program in Washington, D.C. For 20 years, the FYI Program has been a highly esteemed, life-changing youth empowerment program for young adults who have spent their formative years in the U.S. foster care system. The program offers Foster Youth Interns the opportunity to intern in a congressional office and become published authors of a federal child welfare policy report. To help make this program an impactful experience for the interns, CCAI provides full service, wrap-around care throughout the internship. Akela needs kitchen essentials such as pots, pans, cooking utensils, bowls, plates, cups, utensils, and other necessary items.
Akela is 23 years old and lives in NY
Akela is a rising fourth-year undergraduate student at Binghamton University majoring in anthropology. Akela is concentrating her studies in biological anthropology due to her interest in public health, particularly the socioeconomic and political determinants of health. This focus was informed by her experiences growing up in low-income areas of New York City as well as spending more than seven years cumulatively in foster care. While pursuing higher education, Akela has worked to incorporate her knowledge of the public healthcare and child welfare systems into her learning, which has inspired her to hope for a career in childhood health advocacy
