An Assistive Reading Device for Ryan to experience a new way of learning

Posted Aug 3, 2022
Ryan has a traumatic brain injury and is non-verbal. He does not read, but can understand what he is hearing. Ryan will always need supervised care, yet he is capable of learning new things, and experiencing the joy of reading is a big goal for Ryan. His care team has found an assistive reading device that will read the material to him, allowing him to access educational materials in school, as well as reading for pleasure at home. Ryan really enjoys looking at graphic novels, and he would better understand these books if he could listen to the words. With this device, Ryan will be able to use assistive technology to better comprehend text, experience reading for the first time, and improve his social and emotion regulation by accessing grade-level text, allowing him to make academic connections with his peers and teachers. This technology will empower Ryan with the tools he needs in the classroom, and give him a chance to truly unlock the power of his imagination through reading.

Ryan is 14 years old and lives in CO

Ryan is a caring, determined young man who is non-verbal but has found many ways of communicating. He is very active and participates in all sorts of activities including wrestling, church activities, equine therapy, community activities, Special Olympics, and of course school. He has a huge heart and loves to make others smile, and he tries to see the positive in everything.
