Foster and adoptive parenting is a way to share your skills, strength, courage, hope and values with school-aged children who have suffered through painful experiences. Most of the children LFSVA serves struggle because of physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse or neglect. They need families who won’t give up on them, who can be flexible in their parenting style and expectations, and who will help them work through the tough spots. In the Richmond and Tidewater areas we recruit and train adults willing to undertake this life-affirming work. Our program is committed to helping children find permanency and stability. And once a child has been placed, we provide support through things like mentoring and therapy to ensure the relationship’s success. Counseling for adoptive families: Today’s adoptive families need treatment specialists who understand the unique nature of building a family through adoption and the challenges that may arise that are related to their adoption story. Lutheran Family Services of Virginia offers outpatient mental health services by counselors who have received nationally recognized, rigorous training to work with the unique needs of families who have adopted. These services are open to all families in the Piedmont and Tidewater regions who have adopted through domestic infant, international, parental placement or foster care. LFSVA works with the Virginia Post-Adoption Consortium, a collaborative partnership that includes the Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.).
