Beyond juvenile justice reform, Nykia hopes to be a part of the movement to close down the last youth prison in the state. Nykia believes in investing in alternative programs like recreational programs, increased educational opportunities, and job training and placement access.
Nykia just found out her niece is coming into her care, and it's happening fast, with almost no time to prepare. Right now, the queen-size bed she's setting up has no sheets, one of the most basic things needed before her niece even walks through the door. A crisp white sheet set would let Nykia get that bed ready immediately, so instead of scrambling for essentials, she can focus entirely on making sure her niece feels safe, welcomed, and cared for from the very first night.
