Help Jameelah Find A Place To Call Home

Posted Aug 15, 2017
Jameelah aged out of foster care at the age of 18, after spending 4 and a half years in out of home care. Jameelah feels truly blessed to have had the opportunity to complete an intern in Washington DC, working on Capitol Hill, where she was able to work in a Congressional office and advocate for a Foster Care Bill of Rights. Her internship has now come to a close, and unfortunately she has found herself without a place to return home to. Due to a series of unfortunate events, and after the passing of her biological mother last year, she came home from her internship to face the harsh reality that she did not have an actual home of her own to return to. Jameelah will begin her junior year at UW Milwaukee this fall and she is working hard to secure an apartment of her own. She will be an undergraduate junior majoring in Political Science with a minor in International Studies and Arabic at the University, with the goal that someday she will run for public office to help give a voice to those who feel silenced like she once did. She is incredibly hardworking and dedicated to fulfilling her dreams and still, has found that she needs support. Let's help Jameelah with the upfront costs associated with renting an apartment - security deposit and first month rent due at signing is the only obstacle standing in her way to a new apartment!

Jameelah is 33 years old and lives in WI

Jameelah was in the foster care system in Wisconsin and is currently an undergraduate sophomore majoring in Political Science and minoring in Global Studies & Arabic at the University of Wisconsin. Her desire to advocate for youth is shown through her actions, as she states: “I just want Foster Youth to have a fighting chance at success.” This type of passion is exactly what the Foster Youth Internship (FYI) Program® strives for. The FYI Program is a highly esteemed ten-week congressional internship for young adults who spent their formative years in the foster care system. As part of the program, Jameelah will participate in networking events with leaders in the business community and child welfare advocates who represent a wide variety of policy and non-policy related disciplines. She will also meet with legislators to discuss important issues that youth in foster care face and their shared vision for bringing about change in this area. At the conclusion of the program, Jameelah will author a policy report of recommendations on improving the federal foster care system. This report will be presented at a Congressional briefing and a briefing to the White House Domestic Policy Council, as well as disseminated across the country.
