Help Sederic Achieve his Educational Goals

Posted Aug 21, 2019
From Sederic:"Going to dental school has always been a dream of mine and I worked very hard and made a lot of sacrifices to get here. However, as I climbed up the ladder, I realized what separated me from my peers were the availability of resources and family support. Helping me pay for my WREB licensure exam would mean I could practice as a dentist and would allow me to practice dentistry in a underserved community. I became attracted to the dental profession because my own lack of dental care in foster care as mentioned in my personal statement. I struggled to find a pediatric dentist who was gentle and provided quality dental care. Helping me pay for my application fees would allow me to pursue a career in pediatric dentistry and help give children a better dental experience. Many foster youth experience oral care problems and therefore lack confidence in their natural ability to smile. I want to be able to help this population of children. Personally, my smile is my greatest attribute because during the rough times in foster care, smiling gave me a sense of pride, hope and optimism that things will get better. Smiling help disguise my inner pain and emotions when I was around other kids at school. Smiling put others at ease which means I was not perceived as a threat. I want to make sure kids are able to smile. Helping me pay for my flight to extern at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. would give me more insight on residency and also make me a stronger applicant because some programs require you previously completed a externship."

Sederic is 29 years old and lives in CA

As a former foster youth, I have firsthand experience of what it feels like to be forgotten and looked over. To feel less worthy, less good, less capable, less lovable, and less important. And I certainly know what it feels like to not have access to decent oral health care. My experiences have given me a rich perspective on the value of caring for disadvantaged children. The combination of growing up in the foster care system, my own struggles with childhood cavities and the lack of access to timely, oral health care is what has motivated me to pursue pediatric dentistry. In my career, I hope to provide minimally invasive dental care to medically underserved communities and to ensure that the early dental visits that children and youth make are positive and educational experiences.
